Feminism The Advocacy Of Women s Rights On The Grounds...
Micaela Castro English 2 2/29/16 Jane Eyre and Feminism Feminism is defined as the ââ¬Å"advocacy of women s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to menâ⬠(Oxford Dictionary). In the past century, the standards of what is considered feminism have changed. At the time Jane Eyre was published, feminism per se did not exist yet. In the Victorian Era any actions done by women that went against the norms for women for that time period were likely considered atrocious more than rebellious. Regardless, some of those actions would have probably been considered ââ¬Å"feminismâ⬠, even though the term did not exist so nobody called it that. Nowadays the standards of what is considered feminism is much different. The question of whether or not Jane Eyre can be considered a feminist novel, can not simply be answered with a yes or no. At the time this book was written, it would be a feminist book because it was way ahead of its time, but compared to the feminist movement of the 21st century, it would not f it the standards of what is considered to be feminist. You can not say that Jane Eyre is either a feminist book or it is not, because nothing is black and white. Besides, parameters change, and something that was once labeled as one thing doesn t have to be labeled that forever. It s possible for it to have been a feminist book at one point and not be one for todayââ¬â¢s standards. Character Analysis of Faye from ââ¬Åa Secret Sorrowââ¬Â free essay sample
Analysis of Faye From ââ¬Å"A Secret Sorrowâ⬠In the story ââ¬Å"A Secret Sorrowâ⬠, a woman by the name of Faye is battling a traumatic accident. The reference of the car accident sets the reader up for the tone of the story. In the beginning of chapter 11, Faye is very fragile woman. Something is making her feel distraught. When reading the first sentence ââ¬Å"feel the blood drain from her faceâ⬠(Van Der Zee 28) and ââ¬Å"thought she was going to faintâ⬠(28), its not clear what permanent internal injury Faye has, as stated in the preface. In the following few paragraphs the author wrote, ââ¬Å"clutched at him for support, fighting for controlâ⬠and ââ¬Å"legs were shaking so badlyâ⬠. These descriptive statements of Faye keeps the reader engaged to find out whatââ¬â¢s wrong with her and why she feels this way. Faye has always wanted to conceive children, but her hopes and dreams were shattered the day she received the horrible news. She was filled with emotions and was in tremendous grief, as if she had lost a loved one and was mourning.Faye did not want to accept the fact that she will never be able to give life to a child. When Kai finds the number of the psychiatrist, Faye feared that Kai knew, ââ¬Å"He knew, oh God, he knew. She closed her eyes, a helpless sense of inevitability engulfing her. â⬠(29) She felt she couldnââ¬â¢t escape the truth now that he knows about the doctor. Fayeââ¬â¢s mood changes from feelings bereavement to becoming defensive, ââ¬Å"her whole body growing rigid with instinctive rebellion. â⬠(30) Faye defended herself by trying to get away from Kai and his questions.Faye was facing the crisis of her lifetime, where she thought she would not be able to satisfy Kai nor make him happy without giving him the gift of a child and knowing that Kai desperately wanted to have a child with her. For that reason, she feared marrying him. I cant be what you want me to be. We cant have the kind of life you want. .. Im so afraid youll be disappointed. (31) Kai was heart-stricken when Faye finally revealed her secret to him Faye felt denial when Kai asked her why she hadnââ¬â¢t told him. ââ¬Å"Faye heard no more. She ran out the doorâ⬠(31) she couldnââ¬â¢t face the question and had to leave and get away from the confrontation. Faye was avoiding the question that hurt her the most. To Fayes surprise, she thought Kai would leave her for that purpose. On the other hand, Kai just wanted to know why Faye would want to keep a secret like that from him. He did not understand why she would run away from her issue, by ending the relationship and not having to discuss the issue with him. Now that he knew what has been bothering Faye, he promised to stay by her; hoping this situation will not have any affect on their future marriage. Why do you think I want you for my wife because youre some kind of baby factory? What kind of man do you think I am? I love you, not your procreating ability. So we have a problem. Well, well learn to deal with it, one way or another. (33) Kai shows that he truly loves Faye and would be there for her through out any struggle she may endure. Faye, were in this together-you and I. Dont you see that? Its not just your problem, its ours. (33) Faye was afraid to come out with her secret of not being able to conceive children, mainly because she thought that that would affect her relationship with Kai. If I told you you wouldnt want me anymore! (33) Kai understood what Faye was going through and knew how much it meant to her to have children. He also knew that he had to stay by her side during her grief. But Faye felt like she was letting him down. Kai, I I cant live all my life with your regret and your disappointment. Every time we see some pregnant woman, every time were with somebody elses children Ill feel Ive failed you! I. .. (34) At this point, Kai showed his sympathy for her. It did not matter to him that she wasnââ¬â¢t able to carry his children. All he cared about was being happy with Faye and being able to spend the rest of his life with her. However, Faye could not understand why he wanted to be with her and not any other woman who could give life to his children. You have a choice, dont you see that? You dont have to marry me. You could marry someone else and have children of your own. (34) With Faye saying that, Kai still chose to be with Faye because she is the only woman he has ever loved since the first day they met. He could not compare any other woman to Faye, mainly because Faye was different, unique, and filled with love, and she made him extremely happy.Faye and Kais relationship is one of those relationships that can never be broken. Meaning, that they have gotten to know each other and were now at the moment of planning the aspects of their life with one another. With this issue being lifted off their chests and them being able to get pass this situation, Kai and Faye fulfilled their dreams by getting married and adopting three desperate children, who had been longing for love and the warmth of caring parents, and never again having the fear of being abandoned with no food or roof over their heads.Faye had to expect that she would one day have to explain her secret to Kai but why did she wait till he proposed to her? Why didnââ¬â¢t she tell him in the beginning of their relationship? Why did she even give love a chance knowing a man usually wants to have a future with a family? In the beginning of the story Faye didnââ¬â¢t have hope in her love in future. She was previously engaged but broke it off and moved in with her brother. This sounds like she was in extreme denial and wanted to avoid any confrontation of discussing children again.Instead of falling in love with Kai, Faye could have put a barrier up from ever falling in love with another man again. If she did put this barrier up knowing she couldnââ¬â¢t have children, who knows what her future would be like? Knowing that most men want families Faye felt helpless. Faye could have chose to be happier not sharing her secret with anyone and be single the rest of her life. No one wants to be lonely in his or her life but Faye felt like she was better off alone than to explain her secret to a loved one. This could have led Faye to be emotional depressed which could have made her a miserable person. Faye may have turned drugs and alcohol to fulfill her needs. Her life could have been different if Kai left her because he wanted his own children. The feeling of rejection, especially due to a medical issue, could have sent her through depression as well. Some depressions led people to end their lives so they donââ¬â¢t have to deal with it anymore. If Kai said he really wanted to have kids of his own, Faye could have left that night and crashed the car into a river. Some people have a hard time dealing with rejection, depression and disappointment differently, which could lead to a negative result. In conclusion, Faye had a very emotional battle throughout the story. A Secret Sorrow reveals that not everything in life can bring happiness for every situation, but with the search for answers and the help of friends or significant other, anybody should be able to resolve their situation and move on with their life on a brighter note. For Faye, she was on the verge of giving up hope, but since she had the help of Kai, her worst fear ended with true happiness.Furthermore, Faye found happiness at the end of her crisis. With the love of her fiance, Kai, she was able to get through her crisis, and fulfill a happy life with three adopted children. In retrospect, both Faye and the three children can relate to one another. All were going through rough times in their lives until they found each other, to express love and contentment to one another. Fayes life could not be any better with the new family and home she desired for, with the love her life by her side.

Sonny and Gregor an Example of the Topic Literature Essays by
Sonny and Gregor by Expert Sweet Alicia PhD | 14 Nov 2016 In "Sonny's Blues", Sonny sees himself as the typical individual who is curious about the world that envelopes his being, especially the things a person may not have experienced yet but has the subtle hint of eagerness to try things out all for the name of being acquainted with the unfamiliar. There is little doubt to believe that Sonny sees himself this way for the reason that at some point he asked his friend what heroin was like and was told that "it" felt quite good. Another interesting thing to look into is the fact that Sonny wanted to be a jazz musician just like his father's brother. The fact that Sonny kept it as a profound secret tells us that he sees himself just like his father's brother although apparently, he was not able to manage and gather enough confidence to stand up firmly on his own desires and fulfill them just like how a normal human being would. On the other hand, Gregor sees himself as the individual capable r at least willing to continue with life amidst str uggles just to serve those whom he fears most in his life. Despite physical restraints that limit his capability to fulfill his goals, his willingness remains at the core of his consciousness. Not even transforming him into a bug will drain away his desire to work. With this regard, Gregor further sees himself as a strong individual not deterred by the weakness that life may draw upon him. Need essay sample on "Sonny and Gregor" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed These characters perhaps maintain the opposite ends in terms of the changes in their lives. On one hand, Gregor is evidently seen as a 'changed' individual after being mysteriously transformed into a seemingly monstrous vermin. On the other hand, Sonny is seen as a 'static' person from the middle part to the last parts of the story, unable to change his ways especially in terms of his unrelenting or unwavering dependence on prohibited drugs in order to go on with his music. However, the 'change' in Sonny can be observed from the time when he engaged into the using and selling of prohibited drugs. From then on, Sonny was unable to rise above his predicament. Instead, this 'predicament' for others turned into a contributing factor in the musical inclination of Sonny. Because of these things, there are other characters in the story who say things about Gregor and Sonny. For instance, Sonny's brother has a lot of things to say about Sonny to the family of Sonny's brother such as telling him about his habit of addiction to prohibit drugs and how he uses it to sustain his musical performances. A friend of Sonny further reveals to Sonny's brother the details of how Sonny gets acquainted with the 'drug' through his brother. On the other hand, Gregor's family essentially speaks about him in a manner in which he would be able to survive his ordeal. By keeping him in a room isolated from the rest of the people who might have the interest to enter their lives and worsen the situation, Gregor's family opted to keep him in the room for his protection and for his family as well. They say that Gregor is the only one working in the family which eventually made them realize to find jobs on their own in order to sustain their daily subsistence. These things event ually point us to the idea that both Gregor and Sonny have interacted quite well with these 'other' characters in the story. For one, Gregor's interaction with the other characters in the story is manifested through the way in which his family took the responsibility of watching over him in his condition. While being a monstrous vermin, the situation of Gregor can be easily conceived in one's mind: a soul willing to push through with life but is unable to do so, hindered in no small way by his 'new' body in which he grew captive until his last days. Through the help and music of his sister, Gregor is able to connect to the 'other' characters in the story. As for Sonny, the interaction with the rest of the characters in the story revolves around the narration of his brother concerning the experiences he had with his brother from childhood until they grew into adults. The effect of the words of Sonny's friend had a lasting impression on him, especially with regard to the case when Sonny learned that drugs made him feel good. Another point of interaction between Sonny and the characters in the story is the ti me when the friend of Sonny 'accompanied' him, so to speak, during the formative years of his life and later on. From then on Sonny learned how to use the drugto his musical advantage. Further, Sonny is also seen interacting with the family of his brother, especially at dinner together with his brother's wife, discussing things which seemed to alter his life. As he was asked to stay with Isabel while he was away, the interaction is supposed to grow. Apparently, Isabel's piano kept Sonny busy as he explored the depths of his musical inclinations a step further. One similarity between Gregor and Sonny is the fact that both underwent a struggle in their lives which significantly shifted the way in which their world revolved around them. For instance, Gregor's transformation into a vermin greatly affected the way in which he lived his life and the way in which his family behaved which eventually turned out to be for the good. On the other hand, Sonny's situation reflects the struggle of an individual to escape the clutches or reaches of his drug habits by leaving Harlem. Eventually, Sonny failed to do so because of his brother's firm decision not to let him leave their place. In the end, Sonny was the draw even closer to is habits, filling his music with intense passion with the big help of the drugs that he is using. One major difference between Gregor and Sonny is the fact that their struggles are specifically delineated by their scope. While Gregor's struggle seems surreal and more of the physical and emotional aspects, Sonny's condition is related to psychological and emotional aspects. In essence, the authors/narrators of the two stories portray the characters of Sonny and Gregor as individuals struggling to stand on their own amidst the challenges and hindrances that deter them much like the common dealings of humanity from across the globe. Evaluation of Naturalistic Improvisation Essays
Evaluation of Naturalistic Improvisation Essays Evaluation of Naturalistic Improvisation Essay Evaluation of Naturalistic Improvisation Essay In our Drama lessons over the past few weeks, we have been working on a style of drama called Naturalism.Ã Naturalism is a style of drama, which accurately recreates the details of real life on stage. It attempts to make events/situations as realistic as possible, including the characters.Ã We were made to create and rehearse a naturalistic improvisation and present it to the whole class.Ã Firstly, we thought of a setting that we could act as realistically as possible. We didnt think of a plot. I.e. a classroom or a family round the dinner table etc. We then went off and thought about our own individual characters, then shared out ideas with the rest of the group. During rehearsal, we each thought about our characters status, objective, action and subtext. I based each of these things on specific features of different friends. I.e. one of my friends status would be very confident and conveyed to the audience by slouching on a chair but with her head up high. Another friends objective would be to get whatever she wanted etc. Status means how much confidence someone has and how much they are thought of in the world. My characters status was quite high (except she wasnt thought of in the world!!) until the end of our piece. She was very confident in herself and towards other people. She could have been seen as a bully. Her body language however, showed a moody teenager. She had her feet up on a chair that she had moved in front of her, she was moving her head and feet backwards and forwards to the beat of the music from her walkman whilst slouching down on another chair. The objective means what the actors aim is by the end of the scene or play. This is what they want to achieve. The objective of my character was to get some piece and quiet. Ashe was in detention, despite her refusal, with a miserable and boring teacher (David), her friend (Roxana), and an annoying new girl! (Vaishali). Vaishali wouldnt stop talking however much Nicola (my character) tried to stop her. My characters action started off as being very subtle. At the opening scene she was moving her head and foot to the beat of her music whilst playing with her nails. This made an affect as when Vaishali came in, Nicola suddenly became motionless as she stared at Vaishali. Apart from moving around a lot, the end of the piece involved Nicola looking in a mirror doing her make-up and hair. This involved more movement. Action means any kind of movement in a scene whether it be walking and dancing to running and fighting. Subtext is the invisible meaning behind what someone says. Just because they say it doesnt mean they mean it. Subtext can be shown through facial expressions and body language. In our improvisation, Nicola uses a lot of subtext. A lot of subtext was used towards Vaishali. Nicola appeared to look interested in what Vaishali was saying, but Nicolas facial expressions and body language showed that it was the complete opposite. Some subtext was used towards Nicolas teacher. When Nicola and Roxana threw some paper at him he questioned everyone. We lead him to believe that we would never do anything as rude as throw paper at someone and insisted that it was Vaishali. He believed them then, but the two girls got caught later on. I thought our piece of naturalism went quite well and I feel that I played my character quite natural and realistic as possible. There were only a few improvements that I think we could of made. They are:Ã 1. Davids character could have been shown and introduced to the audience a bit more. I.e. he could have been included into our scenes more often.Ã 2. Roxanas characters and mine could have been a bit more different, as we appeared practically the same. For example, we could have same characteristics but have completely different opinions that make us argue a lot. This could of happened on stage.Ã 3. All of our characters could have been studied and explored in a great detail. We could of all found people to base our characters on, and either study them or ask them about themselves. I slightly id this but not to a great extent. I think this way; our characters would have been more natural, more real and more pure.

Operation and Competition Situation of UK Oil & Gas Industry Essay
Operation and Competition Situation of UK Oil & Gas Industry - Essay Example The major rationale for selecting this industry however is that, regardless of its important place in UKââ¬â¢s economy, growth in the sector has not been steady in the last few years as seen in figure 1 below. The paper therefore tries to critique the cause and finds solutions from the perspective of selected companies. BP was selected to be a general representation of larger oil and gas companies whose daily production is beyond 1,000,000 barrels a day. On the whole, the rationale behind the selection of BP is the diversity and differences it offers in its business and marketing approaches as a large company. The selection of Cairn was for the reason of the fact that the company gave a perfect representation of smaller oil and gas companies whose daily production is below 35,000 barrels a day. The company also uses a focus strategic option, which makes it possible to compare this strategic option with other companies to determine its effects. As depicted in figure 2, it will be seen that in terms of production units, it can be said that the selection of Premier have been made based on medium market size with production above 35,000 barrels but less than 100,000 barrels. This is an important rationale to pursue, given the fact that the individual growth of these companies will turn out to be collective growth of the oil and gas industry in the UK (Ferguson, 2004). Gross profit margin: This is a type of profitability financial ratio that measures financial health by estimating proportion of money left over from the companyââ¬â¢s revenues after accounting for the cost of goods sold (COGS) (Weston, 1990). Personal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Personal - Essay Example Secondly, one has to ensure that the business they are operating abides with the law. Dealing with un-licensed and illegal businesses has been one crime that the government has been fighting for many years. Those arrested due to operation of such businesses have always faced harsh penalties, in accordance with the set laws. Therefore, this paper seeks to answer some of the life questions that working adults have to resolve in their lives. What keeps me awake at night every day are my goals and priorities. Every night, I have to ensure that my dayââ¬â¢s plans are accomplished. This is to ensure that I start my day without carrying forward any unaccomplished tasks. I have set my daily goals in which they have to be accomplished. Failure to accomplish them is an indication that my work is lagging behind. That is another indicator of laziness and lack of focus in life. This is the reason I have to ensure that a dayââ¬â¢s target is achieved. Planning next dayââ¬â¢s targets is another reason to stay up late at night. As the manager of my life, itââ¬â¢s my duty to ensure that I have outlined the things that am supposed to do and what I have to achieve on that day (Todd, 25-34). Therefore, no matter how engaging my day may have been, I must plan the next dayââ¬â¢s targets and the way to achieve them. I believe in the slogan that says ââ¬Å"failure to plan is planning to fail.â⬠I have come to realize tha t those who go to bed without analyzing their accomplishments and their failures do not move forward. Therefore, I have made it a habit to analyze all that I have accomplished daily and what I have not. In addition, I have to get a reason for my failure to accomplish a certain task so that I may not repeat the mistake in future. Looking around my friends and those close to me, I get scared since I realize they do not have plans for the future. By future I mean plans for the next second, minute or day. Many of them

Science Report About Education Process Essay Example for Free
Science Report About Education Process Essay There is one fact, and that is that children are curious about everything, and a good way of promoting this is by letting them find and explore new things in their daily lives and in the classroom. So it is essential for them to seek for answers and solve problems. I find it interesting how children are so true and honest about everything they do, for example, when they are looking for something in specific, they get engaged with it and encourage themselves to keep searching until they get the answers. So, if they do this in their daily lives, why not applying this in their learning basis? Children need to work with concrete activities, so that it is easier for them to motivate themselves and develop knowledge in the topic. If we want our students to have a positive attitude in each activity they develop during class, then as a teacher we must have it as well. As an educator, we have to be engaged with science, and we donââ¬â¢t need to be a biologist to work with it, we just have to make research about the topics, the materials used in class, what is appropriate to use in the classroom, and that sort of things. So as a teacher, itââ¬â¢s all right being messy, however we must be organized at all times. Something that I really captured about the reading is the importance of letting children learn with each activity by using their senses. I think the use of senses is probably the best way to provide a well elaborated work. Such as: letting them smell new natural smells, finger-play with different materials or by planting flowers or different vegetables, by looking at pictures and recognizing each element, and also by tasting maybe a vegetable (the teacher needs to do research about it), but still giving them the possibility of experimenting with each activity, and working concretely. Diversity is the key to working in and with science, so it is necessary and essential to bring science to the classroom to engage each student in discovering and building new ideas.
